Sunday Ratings: Football Boosts CBS Lineup; ‘Resurrection’ Sinks

NBC won Sunday’s primetime ratings race behind “Sunday Night Football,” while NFL action also helped CBS’ lineup — including the fall finale of “Madam Secretary” and the final-season premiere of “The Mentalist” — to good numbers. The future doesn’t look great, meanwhile, for ABC’s “Resurrection,” which followed up last week’s preemption with a series low. Of course, “Resurrection” was up against the season finale of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” which is expected to beat every primetime program on the night in key demos. NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs averaged a 6.3 rating/16 share in adults 18-49 and 18.2 million viewers overall on the network’s stations between 8:30 and 11 p.m., with the game’s final averages expected to rise in the nationals by a little more than 10%. In the metered-market overnights, the visiting Broncos’ 29-16 victory averaged a 13.2 household rating/20 share from 8:30 to 11 :15 p.m. ET. It pulled a 46.6/64 in Denver and a 38.0/54 in Kansas City. Elsewhere, CBS benefited from a roughly 30-minute NFL overrun (the conclusion of the New England-Green Bay game) that is expected to deliver about 35 million viewers in the nationals. That helped power “60 Minutes” to season highs (3.7/10 in 18-49, 18.3 million viewers overall), and “Madam Secretary” headed into its short hiatus with best-since-premiere scores (1.9/5 in 18-49, 13.0 million viewers overall). At 9:30 p.m. in much of the country, the season premiere of “The Mentalist” (1.6/4 in 18-49, 10.4 million viewers overall) handily beats its ABC drama competition, matching its year-ago opener at 10 p.m. in 18-49 while rising a bit in adults 25-54 (2.4 vs. 2.3) and total viewers. “CSI” closed things out (1.4/4 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall). ABC opened with “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall), which was on the low side opposite the end of the big football game but rose to a 1.4 in its second half-hour. “Once Upon a Time” (2.0/5 in 18-49, 6.3 million viewers overall) and “Resurrection” (0.8/2 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) followed with season lows, with the former still outperforming its year-ago score and the latter hurting its chances of returning next season by plummeting to its low. Closing things out, “Revenge” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in but joined the net’s other dramas in hitting season lows. Fox had another quiet non-NFL doubleheader Sunday, kicked off by the special “Ica Age: A Mammoth Christmas” (0.8/2 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall) and “Mulaney” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 1.5 million viewers overall), the latter of which fell to its low. Following a repeat of “The Simpsons” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” hit a season low (1.4/3 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall) but its demo growth over lead-in was a positive. A repeat “Family Guy” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall) and original “Bob’s Burgers” (1.0/2 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers overall) followed in the 9 o’clock hour, with the latter up a bit from last week. Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 5.4/14; CBS, 3.1/8; ABC, 1.3/3; Univision, 1.1/3; Fox, 1.0/3; Telemundo, 0.4/1. In total viewers: NBC, 15.6 million; CBS, 15.3 million; ABC, 5.0 million; Univision, 2.7 million; Fox, 2.4 million; Telemundo, 1.0 million.
