Ex-Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell Ordered to Prison Despite Appeal

Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell must report to federal prison Feb. 9 despite his pending appeal, a judge ruled Tuesday. Judge James Spencer denied the request by McDonnell's attorneys for him to remain free during the appeal. McDonnell will have to report to prison on the date set during his sentencing hearing earlier this month.

McDonnell was sentenced Jan. 6 to two years in prison, several months after he and his wife, Maureen, were found guilty of taking more than $165,000 in gifts, trips and loans from a wealthy vitamin executive in exchange for promoting his products. The former governor quickly vowed to appeal. In a court filing late Monday, his attorneys said the appeal process could take almost as long as his two-year prison sentence itself. They argued that McDonnell would be deprived of a meaningful appeal if required to serve the bulk of his sentence before it's resolved. They say the appeal will raise substantial questions, including whether the government's interpretation of an "official act'' is correct. Prosecutors argued that Bob McDonnell hadn't made a compelling case for granting his request for bail pending appeal. Police investigating solicitor's mystery death look at 65 people who might have wanted to harm him

Detectives investigating the mystery stabbing of a solicitor said they investigated whether he was targeted by a killer, was the victim of a random attack or inflicted the fatal injuries himself, an inquest has heard. Jogger Peter Maine, 56, was found while he went for a run along the River Wear after parking in Durham city centre on a Sunday morning in September 2013. An inquest in Crook, County Durham, heard Mr Maine was to be prosecuted on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. He was also under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority following a complaint by a client. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Chapman, who led the inquiry into the married father-of-two's death, said officers looked at 65 people who may have had recent contact with Mr Maine and may have had reason to want to harm him. But those investigations drew a blank. Robbery was ruled out as a motive as he was found with his Rolex watch, wallet and keys. Coroner Andrew Tweddle asked: "It is fair to say, there is not anybody who might be of interest to you, or might be considered a potential suspect, being involved directly or indirectly?" Mr Chapman agreed, saying: "My initial hypothesis was it was murder and it was planned, murder and it was unplanned, or it was suicide." Police managed to trace all but two people seen walking or running in the area of the Wear between 7.30am and 8.30am that day. Neither of the two outstanding people were of particular concern to police, Mr Chapman said. They also searched the Wear and its banks for the weapon used to stab Mr Maine. The three-month search of the water cost £30,000. None of the six knives found in the general area were believed to have been the one used to inflict the fatal injuries, the inquest heard. Forensic pathologist Dr Jennifer Bolton told the hearing two of the three wounds went through the heart. All were closely grouped. But that did not mean Mr Maine would have collapsed immediately upon being stabbed, as some people can continue to move purposefully for up to 20 minutes afterwards, the court heard. Mr Maine's body was found near a sports centre, around 40m from the site of significant blood drops in the middle of a bridge over the Wear. Dr Bolton said there were no signs of any defence injuries often seen on a stabbing victim. Mr Maine had left the family home on a wealthy estate near Billingham, in Teesside, taken his Range Rover up the A1M to Durham and visited his former offices on Old Elvet, which were to be made into student lets. CCTV showed him jogging from the property along the river bank and he was last spotted on camera alive at 7.42am. A member of the public called the emergency services at 8.01am. Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner step out in same camel coat

It looks like Kris Jenner has been raiding her daughters' wardrobes as she stepped out in a coat previously worn by both Kim Kardashian West and Kylie Jenner. Keeping Up With The Kardashians star Kris, 59, was snapped heading out in Beverly Hills yesterday (6 January) sporting a camel Max Mara coat that looked suspiciously familiar... Flashing a smile as she made her way to her car, the momager teamed her super-long wool coat with with an all-black outfit and towering leather thigh-high boots. But we got a serious case of déjà vu when we clocked Kris' ensemble, as daughter Kim, 34, stepped out in the same coat way back in September 2013 while out with Kanye West in Paris. The starlet opted for a more casual look, sporting a grey tee and leggings along with khaki boots while toting a burgundy fedora hat in one hand. And Kim loves her camel coat so much she wore it out in January 2014 too, before reviving it yet again last month. See, Kardashians do recycle their clothes! Following hot on the heels of her big sister, Kylie was then spotted rocking the exact same cover-up during a grocery shopping trip in Los Angeles on 28 December 2014. The youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister, 17, showcased her effortless style credentials by adding a black crop top and lace-up biker boots, pulling her locks back into a bun while shielding her peepers with statement sunglasses. So, fancy snapping up their coat for yourself? It's called the 'Manuela' coat and is designed by Max Mara, but unfortunately it will set you back a whopping £1,120. Gulp. Get the look for a fraction of the price with this camel coat, £59, from Topshop instead. Kardashian style on a budget? Yes please! Who wore their camel coat best? Keshia Knight Pulliam Is Now Defending Bill Cosby, So This Just Gets Worse And Worse

So remember this morning when I wrote about how absurdly awkward it was on The Celebrity Apprentice last night when a woman got fired for refusing to contact Bill Cosby and ask him for money? Well that woman was Keshia Knight Pulliam, who played Rudy Huxtable on The Cosby Show, and now she’s speaking up in Cosby’s defense. Isn’t that just GREAT??? (No.) Basically what happened in the episode is that all the cast members were supposed to ask their famous friends for money for a fundraiser, and Keshia balked at getting in touch with her old costar. Here’s what she told The Today Show about it when she went on this morning: “I know ‘The Cosby Show’ is in reruns, and everyone thinks that we’re this family that has dinner every Friday night, but the reality was I hadn’t spoken to Mr. Cosby. I felt that it would be tactless, very rude to call someone and be like, ‘Hey, so, let me have some money right now.’” And honestly, that was enough to explain her decision to me, because A. it’s what she’s been saying from the beginning, and B. the rape allegations really had nothing to do with her. For as much as I was bothered by the way NBC edited the episode and their failure to provide context for it in the wake of the resurfaced rape allegations against Bill Cosby, all of that stuff really has nothing to do with Keshia…which is why I’m so bummed that she went on to weigh in: “What I can say is this: I wasn’t there. No one was there except for the two people who know exactly what happened. All I can speak to is the man that I know and I love.”

Sorry, quick question. Are we considering all the accusers as one person? Because otherwise, that statement should probably be amended to ‘no one was there except for the twenty-eight people who know exactly what happened’, right? To account for the fact that to date, twenty-seven women have accused him of assault? Seems like we should, but by all means, continue. “Ultimately, they’re just that, allegations. You know, it’s very much been played out in the court of public opinion. But we’re still in America, where ultimately you’re innocent until proven guilty. I wasn’t there. That’s just not the man I know. So I can’t speak to it.” Yeah but unfortunately…you just did.
